Dug, shaped and sealed ponds and lakes that hold water, drain right, and look great on your place.

A good pond is one of the best things you can add to an East Texas property, for livestock, fishing, irrigation or just the view, but a pond that will not hold water is a hole full of disappointment. Building one that fills and stays full takes real know-how: reading the soil, shaping the basin, sealing it right, and getting the drainage and spillway correct.

Gardner Excavating has dug, shaped and sealed ponds and lakes across East Texas for 35+ years, from small stock tanks to multi-acre lakes. It is some of our favorite and most-requested work, and one of the things our repeat customers call us back for, one review even hopes to get us back to enlarge their pond.

We build ponds that hold water, drain the way they should, and look like they have always belonged on your place.

Pond & lake work includes:
  • New pond and lake construction
  • Stock tanks to multi-acre lakes
  • Basin shaping, clay work and sealing
  • Dam and berm building and compaction
  • Spillway and overflow construction
  • Enlarging and deepening existing ponds
  • Repairing ponds that will not hold water

Reading The Ground

The first question with any pond is whether the soil will hold water, and where the good clay is. Decades of digging East Texas ponds tells us a lot before we ever start, and we shape the pond to use the ground you have.

We site the pond to catch the water it needs, size it for your use, and plan the basin so it holds and does not leak away through sand or a bad seam.

Shaping & Sealing

We dig and shape the basin with the right slopes and depth, then work the clay and seal the bottom and sides so it holds water instead of soaking away. A properly sealed pond is the difference between one that fills and one that never does.

The dam or berm is built and compacted to hold, because a pond is only as good as the ground holding the water back.

Spillways & Drainage

Every pond needs somewhere for the overflow to go. We build the spillway and drainage so a heavy East Texas rain runs off safely instead of washing out the dam or flooding what is below.

New pond or an old one that will not hold, we build them and fix them, and can enlarge an existing pond if you are ready for more water.

Questions About Ponds & Lakes

Why won't my pond hold water?

Usually the soil, the seal or a bad seam. Sandy ground or a spot where the clay is thin lets water soak away. We can look at it, find the problem, and reshape and seal it so it holds. Fixing leaking ponds is common work for us.

Can you build a big lake, not just a pond?

Yes. We build everything from a small stock tank to multi-acre lakes, sized and shaped for your land and your use.

Can you enlarge my existing pond?

Absolutely, it is a common request. We can deepen and widen an existing pond and rebuild the dam and spillway to hold the extra water.
